Belgian girls play 1st women’s lacrosse match on Belgian soil

Ghent – 17/04. On a lovely warm sunday afternoon, women lacrosse history was made in Belgium. Three Belgian teams, Ghent Gazelles, Red Rhino’s and the Buggenhout Brewers, were thrown together with the Den Haag first ladies to make up a friendly game. But before you can play, you have to know the basics and rules.
The sun was high in the sky when we started our first warm-up, lead by the Den Haag Ladies. There was loads of foot work involved. After our muscles were happily warm, we started out with the basics: throwing, cathing and cradling exercises. The Dutchies thaught us with great passion and corrected us with the knowledge of master Yoda. They reminded us that women lacrosse was not about force, but about mastering the techniques that make us fast and play as a team.

When it was time to take our skills to the next level, all of the girls were divided into two groups with matching jerseys. Team red vs. team Green. And so we laid upon the grass and went through all the rules. The most important ones, which are ofcourse the most elaborate and difficult ones, were all explained to us so we could make the best out of our first game.

The sun was already high in the sky and we were getting our tan on, when it was gametime. The first draw is usually the most excited one that sets the tone of the game. Team Green had ball possesion pretty quick and only seconds later, a first goal arrived. Lisa Mevenkamp, the player with the most experience under the Belgian girls, dropped it like it’s hot.
A couple of times was a second goal anticipated but victory stayed under covers. That was until a second goal from our opponent in the red team came, credit to Debby Van Noten. It stayed calm for a while, the dutchies holding back to let us compete on our own level, but a battle was rising in the fan of the red team. Emanuela Vandeveire gave an assist to Kiani, bringing the green team in an advanced position (2-1).

During the second half of the game, things started to heat up. One goal followed the other goal. Lisa Mevenkamp gave her all, brining the total up to 3-1. Lisa De Wilde didn’t stand still as well, making the following 3 goals with one assist from Lisa Mevenkamp and a crease-roll. The Lisa dream team was born. It seemed as so there was no hope left for the red team, but their defense came through, fighting for every ball. In the last few minutes, when the green team was tired, Delphine de Smet found a loophole in the opponent’s defense, passing the ball to Anne van den Berge, who brought the total up to 6-2.

This was truly a day to remember. We would like to that the dutch girls for teaching us and giving us a great lacrosse experience. Also kuddos to Saskia,  Erwin and Jan for arranging most of the bootcamp.
