Kings beat Goblins to grab 4th playoff spot

Merksem, November 6th: Kings – Goblins would be a decisive match to determine which teams would grab the third and fourth play-off spot. Kings Lacrosse need a win, and hope the Brewers would lose against the Rhinos. If the Kings would win by 9 goals or more, they would even jump over the Goblins in the rankings. So the stakes were very high! And that was clearly visible on the field. It was a very hard and though match and the muddy field made the battle just a little bit more dirtier.

It took the teams a very very long time to break the deadlock. Eventually the first goal came from the Goblins through topscorer Felix De Can. At that time the lead was deserved. The game really picked up after the goal, and the battle had begun! Kings took the lead after goals from Delft mercenaries Tim Wunderlich and Lex Janssen. At the end of the first quarter the scores were even again after Loïc Van Laere had made a hardfought goal.

The second quarter and the beginning of the third quarter was all about the Kings. They scored 6 times (Janssen 2x, Wunderlich 2x, Levi Van Hees & Kristof Gommers), while the Goblins could only score through Bob Smarius (who made his comeback after 6 months). The Goblins didn’t give up though, they found new energy and scored through De Can, Smarius and Jan Van Cauwenberge. Kenneth Sips scored for the Kings after a great individual action.

It was still all to play for in the last quarter, but then the Kings increased the lead again through Janssen and Robin Roevens. Over and out for the Goblins? Not at all, Felix De Can scored three-in-a-row to get the Goblins back in the race. It seemed that that was their last gasp of energy though, Wunderlich (2x) and Janssen made the final score eventually 14-9. Goblins secure their 3rd place in this way, and the Kings grab the fourth en final play-off spot due to the expense of the Brewers.

  1. How come there are only eight goals made by the Goblins if you count them, but nonetheless the score is 14-9?

  2. corrected. There was 1 goal by Felix missing.
